Continuing with the Christian
tradition, I chose
this painting of St. Thomas of Villanueva Distributing Alms by Murillo
to remind me of almsgiving and charitableness. If you have read other entries, you
will remember that I first decided on my New Plan because I was spouting off
about “charity” and realised I had to come good on my word. In fact Ximena
is a good teacher of this, as she is motherly towards all, and gives to the
poor. I began doing the same, from reason, not from natural desire. I set up my
charity structure and do my good works… remembering Virtue 13 of the true yogi,
“Not caring for the fruits of action necessary actions are to be performed.” And
remember, even charitable works done for others are really done for one’s own
good (MB 12.292.01). It is the giver, not the receiver, who is blessed. Yogiraj
Mumtaz Ali says: “When you serve a less fortunate person in any way –
material or spiritual – you are not doing him or her a favour. In fact, one who
receives your help does you a favour by accepting what you give, thereby
helping you to evolve and move closer to the divine, blissful being, who in
reality is within all.” Ten percent of one’s earnings are given to charity,
divided into thirds. You choose your organisation, institution or your needy. I
have taken charge of various indigent persons around my dwelling place and see
to it they have food. And this is the introduction to the four main Virtues. In
successive entries we can talk about the other 22.
