Edward’s Diary Entry 28 – Virtue 8: Austerity (tapas), Ability to make efforts

“He practises spiritual disciplines…”, says the Gita. Austerity (tapas) is the concept. Tapas (derived from Sanskrit tap, “heat”) includes worship of the gods or the twice-born, the teachers and the wise; the study of the Vedas; and speech which is truthful, beneficial and pleasant, while refraining from speaking what is true if it is not pleasant, or what is pleasant if it is false. This is the Sanatan (eternal, ancient) dharma. So this Virtue is a compendium of things and is a little hard to understand at first. Should I be austere? Should I make efforts? Do I practise spiritual disciplines? Like other Virtues, this is a mix, but yes, there has to be an effort, and the effort is being austere in thinking, speech and doing. A Buddhist ox is a good representation of this because it is strong enough to make major efforts and the painting is austere and direct in its technique, like many Zen paintings. I liken this Virtue to the Stoic quality of austerity and Marcus Aurelius’ conducting your triumph as a funeral and your funeral as a triumph. Or the Sufi saying of “being in the world but not of it”. But I needed to study its implications and find more information about it. Occasional fruit and vegetable dieting and fasting had once been an austerity practise of mine, so I stuck with that for the time being, as social life sometimes leads one to certain excesses. I also counted any extra effort in doing mental exercises and other pursuits as a good way to start experiencing this Virtue. More time was needed to come to grips with this. So let’s just remember we need effort (coming from “heat” energy?), a certain control over what we do and say, self-discipline, and a certain attitude of brooding and meditating… More anon.

These boys have something to say…

They talk joy... They see you coming and start wagging their tails like crazy, jumping up to say hello, where were you all this time, I’m so glad you came… They’re brothers, classified as Anatolian shepherds, guarding their flock. They’re kind and loving, but they’re guard dogs, so anything unusual coming within a mile of their territory will spark them off, and they’ll bristle and bark with their deep voices to announce the news. Coyotes and bears, even porcupines, beware! Other dogs, too. They’re true and faithful to their flock, and no one except a friend is allowed near. They are unerring, they know the score at all times. We call them guard dogs, give them names, pet them and talk to them. But we don’t really “know” them. We are too human and think too much to know what a dog is. They have an advantage: they don’t think like we do all the time. They just go with the flow and do what the universe wants… Virtues incarnate, hearts of gold, brave boys who play and tumble in the snow. A little rough with each other, much gentler with frail humans. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could learn a little humanity from them? Yet we can if we practise our own Self-Awareness and heighten our experience to open up our human minds a little more. And break down the barriers, fences and gates that constrain us.

Can Anger be Justified?

Anger is an “A-particle”, an invisible particle that uses one energy unit, but with hidden trick to it. Science says “Energy is neither created nor destroyed.” It is transformed.

Let’s take this assertion as true. Because every wave in the ocean creates a corresponding dip. The breeze blows the treetop to one side and when it subsides, the treetop goes back to its original position. Every action has its reaction, they say. And every action needs energy to work. The sun sends its quota of energy to the Earth and here it is distributed. The solar power striking Earth today, from Worldometers, is above 2.4 trillion MWh at 8 o’clock in the evening. With our current world population of over 7.3 billion people, that’s 334 MWh of energy for each person and his or her environment. Obviating plant life, marine life and animal life, let’s look at human life only. Theoretically let’s say we have 100 “energy units” (of whatever size) ready to be used for our day. These 100 “energy units” correspond to my daily fuel. What is energy used for? For doing work, they say. What kind of work? This is what we have to reason out. For our instinctive processes, let’s leave aside a daily quota of 20 units. This is used below human awareness, on the level of automatic energy only, and just keeps our bodies going. So we are left with 80 energy particles for the day for our more sensitive emotional and intellectual use, and for energy called “conscious” energy, or human awareness, or simply “presence”.

We now take three types of persons, based on character, as described by the three gunas, or forces. This comes from some of the oldest-known ancient wisdom in the world, the Vedas and Gita, so it is good enough for our purposes – better than many – but of course they could be complemented by other more modern classifications, as long as they include the concept of various levels of the psyche, from more outward to more inward, or purer to coarser, and differentiate between qualities of mind, and corresponding types of energies.

Case 1: The Tamas person, or tamasic character, is described as follows:

Tamas is born of ‘ignorance’. Under this influence man’s intellectual capacity to discriminate between right and wrong is adversely affected.
A Tamasic person focuses all his interest and attention upon himself/herself. All his/her actions and perceptions, emotions and thoughts are directed only to the welfare of himself/herself. But since the world is not designed to cater to any particular individual, these demands remain unfulfilled. The tamasic mind is never at rest. It is always discontented and disturbed. There is no consistency of purpose, brilliance of thought, tenderness of emotion or nobility of action.
Defining Traits:
- Loves to work…and work hard.
- Doing labour and physical work are the key features of Tamasic people.
- Follows inertia – and soon loses interest in any activity.
- Theoretical, more concerned with what is going on in his/her head than what is happening around him/her.
- Frustrated when faced with facts and details.
- Stressed by invasion of personal space.
- “I don’t care what happens to anybody, including myself”.

This is a worst-case scenario. Case 1: The Tamas person.
During the day, energy units are used for processes such as the following:
Fear
15
Cruelty
5
Deceit
5
Anger
10
Nervousness
8
Maliciousness
6
Lust
10
Pride
8
Greed
3
TOTAL
70
Remainder
10
70 units – negative uses
10 units– positive uses

The actual numbers are not relevant, because the possible variations are infinite. The total and the “remainder amount” are relevant.

The work done today by this person has used up or transformed energy for the distribution of the following: 70 units in relation to himself, and mostly likely to others, in which energy has been used for processing and distributing fear, cruelty, deceit, anger, nervousness, maliciousness, lust, pride and greed on the planet. These 70 particles have been distributed to (probably) ALL THE PERSONS with whom this Case 1 has been interacting throughout the day. The effect of these particles in these other persons, assuming they are the same basic kind of person as the Subject, is to stimulate the same kind of energy use in them, ie, the negative qualities have been transmitted to others, and these others will then process them and transmit them in turn to yet others, creating an exponential effect of negativeness, or a spiralling effect that cannot change until someone stops it or changes it. Case 1 complains to Case 2, who then interacts with Case 3 and does the same, who in turn transmits similar negativity to Case 4, 5 6, etc. So much for the outward-facing world.

In the inward-facing world, that is, in Case 1’s mind itself, these 70 energy units have been used to reinforce patterns of character (habits) that use this kind of energy. Fear, cruelty, deceit, anger, etc. have been reinforced in Case 1’s mind, so this energy has been utilised in “remaining the same”. Remaining the same means utilising the same personality or Ego, reinforcing the same Ego, and this Ego has not been analysed, rationalised, studied or investigated in any way, as tamasics don’t usually do that. Most of this work is below the level of consciousness, using only the automatic and sensitive energies. Energy has been used to perpetuate a “fictional” personal Ego, but transmitting “real” negativity.

In the animals, thought cannot become Intellect or Reason. The animals are limited to instinctual and emotional behaviour. We don’t have to analyse the animals, because animals are guided by Nature and instinct does all the work. They are as they are, as Nature makes them, fixed in definite patterns. But in Man, there is a possibility of Intellect, so if it is not used, as in tamasics, base human instinct takes over and the experience is under the influence of Unconsciousness and Non-Intellect. The 10 energy particles used for positive thoughts or actions – say this tamasic person has a wife and child and he loves and shows kindness to them– are cancelled out by the 70 negative thoughts. This person is a net negator of Intellect, and uses energy in a negative way.

Case 1’s Karmic Burden
Here is the hidden trick. Each of Case 1’s “energy units” is pre-organised to carry a terrible burden. Each particle has a “tracer”, much like the code in our DNA, so it can always be traced back to the original Emitter. This is the karmic effect of emission and transmission of energy units.

Each time an energy unit is used to reinforce Ego in non-virtuous or negative behaviour, it affects both the Emitter and possibly others. In the Emitter it fuels further negativity in the mind. In other Tamasic or other characters it fuels further negativity. And the tracer effect means that this negativity is identified as coming from the Case 1 Emitter and can be traced back to him. The karmic system is set up with this trick, and so negativity tends to increase as it is transmitted, but it is also collected in a storehouse or file* of traceable negative particles, which builds up and has to be returned at some point to the original Emitter – like a loan of energy units which has to be paid back, with the “interest” being the consequences caused by the original energy unit in spiralling into additional negativity due to Case 1’s initial negativeness. This is only cancelled out by one’s own or somebody else’s positivity, as purported by the ritual of confession in a Catholic church, say for the absolution of sins. This is the danger for the Tamasic character: everything he does can be traced back to him and eventually returns to him in the form of more negativity, which remains as a charge pending review and cancellation. A loan to be paid back, accruing interest.

* If Google can store somewhere between 10-15 exabytes of data, and man only generally imitates what the universe can do, it is not inconceivable that a planetary “karma file” could store all coded data on human behaviour, making every single human thought and action significant for a person’s life. We think in finite terms, but the universe operates in infinity and eternity, so why could this not be true?

Case 2: The Rajas person, or rajasic character, is described as follows:

When Rajas influence dominates, there is desire for acquisition of things and attachment to things acquired already. The person normally remains in a stable equilibrium. But when he/she looks at an object of desire the equilibrium is disturbed and the mind is filled with ‘passion’ expressing in a million different urges, desires, emotions and feelings.
Such an individual can never keep quiet, but must necessarily act on endlessly earning and spending, racing and procuring, procreating and protecting, and thirsting for more and more. He/she is filled with joys of success and involved in the sorrows of failures.
Defining Traits
- One who acts – energetic, restless and aggressive.
- One who organises people to work together.
- Strength is the key feature of Rajasic people.
- Initiative and Creativity, Energetic Doer, Takes charge of events, Diversified interests, Loves to co-ordinate and supervise people, A control freak.
- Risk of burning out, Hypersensitive, Tendency for emotional outburst or withdrawal and depression.
- Salient Characteristics: Hurry and Worry.
- Often looked upon as an achiever “They are like steamrollers, rolling relentlessly over any obstacle in their way.”

This is the second-worst-case scenario. Case 2: The Rajas person.
Fear

Deceit

Anger
8
Nervousness

Maliciousness
6
Lust
5
Pride
8
Greed

TOTAL
60
Rest
20
60 units – negative uses
20 units – positive uses

The work done today by this person has used up or transformed energy for the distribution of the following: 60 particles in relation to himself and mostly like to others in which energy has been used for the distribution of fear, cruelty, deceit, anger, nervousness, maliciousness, lust, pride and greed on the Earth.
Distribution: 60 particles to self and others, same as above.

In Case 2’s mind, these 60 particles have been used to reinforce patterns of character (habits), same as above.

This person is also a net negator of Intellect. His 20 positives slightly reduce his karmic burden, but it is a lost cause.

KARMIC BURDEN
60 negative points.
20 positive points.
The Karmic burden is still not in this person’s favour, nor does it help the world. It increases negativity.

Case 3: The Sattwic person, or Sattwic character, is described as follows:

Under the Sattvic influence the mind is steady, free from agitations and inertia. Mind experiences peace and happiness, better understanding and intellectual comprehension. It describes the limits of ‘goodness’ though gives freedom from agitation.
Thus, whenever a given mind is in an inspiring and creative mood it is capable of vast knowing and deep understanding. A true scientist, working self-dedicatedly in his laboratory; a painter working at his canvas; martyrs facing cruel persecution, politicians suffering long years in jail for standing up to their convictions are all examples of individuals inspired by their creative mind.
Defining Traits:
- Works in harmony with the environment
- Creativeness is the key feature of Sattvic people.
- Hardworking and Conscientious, Efficient and Systematic, Respect for others, Calmness with quiet confidence, Dependable - Living in the present – ready for whatever comes.
- Your ‘will’ is controlling your ‘desires’.
(Will is the steering and brake, and the desire is the accelerator).

But still, this is an ideal, so let us say our Sattwic character is still on the way to becoming Sattwic and transmits energy in the following way:

Fear
2
Cruelty
2
Deceit
2
Anger
4
Nervousness
4
Maliciousness
4
Lust
4
Pride
6
Greed
2
TOTAL
30
Rest
50
30 units – negative uses
50 units – positive uses

The work done today by this person has used up or transformed energy for the distribution of the following: 30 particles in relation to himself and mostly like to others in which energy has been used for the distribution of fear, cruelty, deceit, anger, nervousness, maliciousness, lust, pride and greed on the Earth, because his hold on the mind and on the virtues is not yet firm.

But 50 particles have been distributed to others in a positive way. The energy has been used as follows: Given similar situations as in the Tamasic and Rajasic characters above for today, the Sattwic emitted 50 positives to others and to him/herself. Only 30 were lost due to imperfect application of the virtues, signifying only lack of self-knowledge, lapses of unconsciousness, lack of awareness, etc. Also deeply ingrained character traits which have not yet been purified, etc.

This person is NOT a net negator of Intellect. His/her karmic burden is lessened by giving out 50 positives and mistakenly giving out 30 negatives. Net increase 20.

But his 50 positives, duly traceable back to him/her, have produced perhaps another 20 positives in others, as in his daily transactions, fear has been met with courage, cruelty with kindness, deceit by truthfulness, anger has been met with indifference, nervousness with calm, maliciousness with compassion, lust or desire with non-attachment, pride with self-effacement, greed with charity, etc. In short, much negativity of redistributable energy has been put to positive use.

So the Sattwic is a mind-cleaner, both for him/herself and for others and the world, and the effect of all omissions and commissions (unintended or unwanted emission of negative particles) is being taken care of and cancelled out, producing an excess for him/herself in the future and for others. This is effectively the work of the purported Saints in religion, whose mere presence absolves the sins of others and restores them to health or sanity or increases saintliness in others, of course increasing said saintliness in him/herself (with Self being understood as something real, and not a fictional personality self, called an “ego”).

KARMIC BURDEN
30 negative points.
50 positive points.
The Karmic burden is NOW in this person’s favour, and it helps others and the world. It increases positivity.

Energy used for Anger

So let’s take just one feature of this system and analyse it to see whether it is better to become angry or not: think in anger, react in anger, express anger and speak in anger and perhaps allow anger to turn into violence, and hurt or kill someone. Of course practically all would agree that the final result, hurting and killing, is bad. This would be called “mismanaged anger”, because modern thinking, despite anger always having been classified as a vice or a sin in religions and philosophical systems of the past, now tends to justify anger as a “normal human emotion”. But where does this anger come from, apart from being a “normal” conditioned response? The first instance is the impression in the mind, and that is a “thought”. Where does the angry thought come from?

Anger is defined as a negative reaction to a desire, which is the primary thought: “When a man’s desire is not gratified and when one stands in the way of its fulfilment, a man can interpret this as an offense to his perception of “self”, and allow anger to move him. The desire gets transmuted into anger. When one is under the sway of anger, he/she will commit all sorts of sinful deeds. He loses his memory; his understanding becomes clouded; and his intellect gets perverted.” Of course if one does not know one’s desires, and they are thwarted, and anger ensures, it is already too late. The psychology of the possible interaction is as follows.

X and Y (Tamas/Rajas to Tamas/Rajas)
X is “angry”. He is expressing a “normal human emotion”. X speaks an angry word and goes on to commit an angry action towards Y. In our view, a unit (or units!) of energy is/are being used to trigger a “negative anger particle”, an A-particle in X’s mind, which is being transmitted to his environment. Y is also a “normal human being”. His mind is identified with his own ego, which has evolved due to past conditioning, without much thought or philosophy or religion, and due to his ingrained behaviour patterns. The A-particle produces in Y this wave of desire that this “word” or “action” should not be the WAY IT IS. Thus Y uses one or various energy units to produce a thought in his mind, thinking, “How dare he say such a thing to me?” “Why is this action being done to me?” Or perhaps it is done to others, which also provokes Y. The desire that this should not be done, remaining unfulfilled, becomes “anger”, and this anger is unleashed on the speaker or doer. An A-particle from X is met with another A-particle from Y, or more A-particles if the situation spirals out of control. Anger has been transmitted and as a response, anger has been returned. Depending on the actual expenditure – this we cannot gauge – maybe 1 anger particle has been emitted and 3 have been returned. This is a net increase in anger particles in the world. Energy units have been expended to produce and transmit Anger. Emitter and receiver may share the sum total of these traceable Anger particles or they may only be responsible for their own, but they have both contributed to an increase in the amount of Anger in the world. Energy has been expended to produce BAD work.

X and Z (Tamas/Rajas to Sattwic)
X is “angry”. An angry word is pronounced or an angry action is done by X which affects the mind of Z, who is an aspiring Sattwic character. X uses a unit of energy to produce a negative anger particle, ready for transmission. But Z’s mind, accustomed to practising virtues and not at that moment solely identified with his own small ego, recognises other factors involved and checks or stops the process with a faculty that stands above the “ego”, not using automatic or sensitive energy to activate past conditioning or habit, but using a more conscious (higher-grade) energy, thinking along these lines: perhaps X is already upset about something else, perhaps X’s digestion is bad, maybe X is known to have a complaining nature in any case and therefore his words must be taken with a pinch of salt, or with patience. Or, yes, the action does affect Z physically – X has taken his iPhone, X has given him a mean look, or has asked for charity and not getting any says that Z is “bad”. Or X has shouted at Z and actually hit him because he has mistaken him for X’s spouse’s secret lover, etc. In whatever case, the anger particle being transmitted is detained, inspected, analysed (given awareness of present and sufficient determinative faculty) and it is… cancelled out. Not returned to sender as is; no, that would not be kind, or virtuous. It is taken in, accepted, put in the right place – the furnace of the mind – into the fires of sacrifice – and the energy is transmuted into a positive particle. It does not produce an automatic wave of desire or anger which can evolve into more and more anger. It is cleansed, purified and then it is neatly returned to the sender as a gift of charity or forgiveness. In this situation, there is a net increase of Gentleness in the world. Traceability allows it to be returned to Z at some time. Since the transmutation has Z’s label on it, at some point in time, Gentleness will also come back to Z. Z has done his work properly. And in the world there has been a net increase in GOODNESS. An energy unit has been used to produce GOOD work.

This presupposes all the theories of the Creation of the world and that the Creator saw that the world was GOOD. And that is probably what any Creator of any Thing would want. If I, as creator, make something I deem to be GOOD in the beginning, I would like to see that GOODNESS increased, because I know that there will always be an automatic negative entropy or decrease of GOODNESS due to the limitations of time and space. So any increase in GOODNESS is what I as creator really want. Everyone is satisfied. The original Emitter of anger receives good, the Transmuter of anger makes it good, the GOODNESS of the good increases and helps decrease what will naturally happen in time and space anyway – BADNESS. So 7.3 billion people x 334 MWh = 2,4382E+15 MWh of energy for either GOOD or bad. One has to choose. And that is the reason for returning GOOD for bad.

(* Excuses not to put this into practise should be dealt with in a further study.)

The Hunters

It was 12 o’clock midnight. Friday. We were driving through the Black Forest in Germany, about to reach our hotel hidden in the mountains. When we set out, I was a man. Along the way, I became a woman.
Man is a strange creature. I mean human beings in general, not just men. Nature controls all the animal species, like a wise and generous mother. She tells them when to come on heat, when to breed,  how to care for their babies; when to fly south, when to migrate north, where to find food and water. Man has lost this ability. Man is controlled by societies of men. By upbringing, by a collective unconsciousness, by other men. Not infrequently by other women.
In one instant, as a man in a car, I was invaded by the spirit of a lady demon from the forest. Suddenly I no longer thought or felt like a man. And yet I sat listening to the conversation of the two other men in the moving vehicle. The subject was hunting. Not hunting in the forest – hunting for women (listen to their song!).
Here we had two married men professing to be hunters. Yes, they had wives. Yes, they had children. Before we set out from Spain, I personally saw one of them make the effort and find the time to drive an extra kilometre to give his two little kids a goodbye kiss, giving another to his wife too. But all that was beside the point. As soon as they reached the airport, the typical male banter came pouring out.
       “Did you see that?”
       “What?”
“The girl going down the escalator. God, was she hot!”
       “So?”
“I’d give her such a drilling that she’d never forget it!”
Seven seconds later, there were more comments as the females continued to file by. The men’s eyes were equally divided between the flight information panels and the various salient parts of female anatomies breezing by.
I was spared more comments on the plane, because I had a seat in a different row, but upon our arrival in Germany, there was more of the same:
“Oh my God! What torture! Didn’t you see how that air hostess kept walking up and down the aisle with that tight ass? What a backside!”
“Well, I saw it, but I think she’d be a little too young for you…”
       “Who cares!”
“Well, did you get her phone number?”
“No,” said my companion, looking a little dumb.
The next in line were the Lufthansa hostesses at the airport, then the girls at the Rent-a-Car, then some imagined blonde Germanic female in my travelling companion’s head. It didn’t stop, and two male heads kept twisting and turning with every step, only dampened by their increasing thirst and hunger. The predators had been let loose… You could hear the sound of the hunt… (listen to the hounds!)

Back in the car, an explanation was being given of what a “hunter” is. All men are hunters, natural hunters. It is part of their makeup. They look at women and desire them. All the time. They notice things like buttocks twitching in front of them, breasts bouncing as they walk by, shapely legs in pantyhose walking past, hair blowing in the breeze. The really sensual types – not so frequent, in my opinion – will sniff the air as a woman walks past to catch a whiff of her aroma. And this hunt is always proceeding, with the hunter exerting all his innate abilities to find and seize his prey. Very, very often, he will fail miserably. No matter – his ego is hardened by failure. It makes him more persuasive. Does he learn? Who knows? Maybe some men are capable of learning, others merely repeat their ingrained patterns and hope for the best. Whatever the outcome, the repetitive hunting mechanism seems to be unleashed whenever the man is free from the surveillance of his partner.

“But aren’t you guys married?” said my female invading spirit through my mouth at two seconds past midnight.
“Of course we are,” said number one.
“And happily,” said number two, “But that doesn’t prevent us from hunting at any time when we are not at home.”
“But surely you are being unfaithful, at least in spirit,” I protested.
“Yes and no,” was their reply. The less articulate number one simply shrugged. The more loquacious number two explained that there are two different worlds: “at-home” and “away-from-home”. “Away from home”, anything can happen. “At home” is sacred and nothing comes into the home to interfere.
“You mean anything that happens during the hunt doesn’t affect your home life?” I queried.
“That’s right,” said number two. “Nothing comes into the home. Nothing interferes with the wife or the kids.”
“Well, I congratulate you!” said I. “At least under one roof you can be called ‘faithful’.”
“But when we’re out or away, that’s a different story,” continued number two. “We hunt, we hope, we look and we taste if we can, and if something comes up, we take it…”
“And you think that is OK?” my female spirit asked.
“Sure it’s OK, as long as it doesn’t affect the home,” punctuated my number two.
The woman in me now thought of a way to test their theory, so I questioned them further.
“And do you think you are really the hunter?”
“Yes, we are the hunters,” was number two’s reply.
“But perhaps as hunters, you are merely expressing a wish, and when that wish is understood, you become the prey of a woman who wants to be hunted. How does that sound to you?”
“Mmm, you mean we are not the hunters?”
“Yes, that’s what I mean. You hunt, and you get rejected. OK, you are just hunting. But if you hunt and you get accepted, it’s because the woman is also hunting and she just lets you think you are hunting, but is really the hunter herself, because she is the one saying ‘yes’. It all depends on her.”
“But we started the hunt, so we are the hunters,” he said protestingly.
“Ah, but it is the woman who finally accepts and agrees, so she controls the whole process from the start – maybe she was intentionally dressed for the occasion, made-up, perfumed, you know, and she even walked and talked sensuously just to attract you!”

“Well, of course, but she’s only placing herself on display. We do the hunting,” affirmed my now very dubious number two.
Ten minutes later, after passing under the dense overhanging trees of the road up the mountain, we came out onto a higher plateau, saw the lighted castle in front of us and pulled into the driveway. We got out of the car at the hotel entrance. A good-looking woman was waiting for us. I suddenly felt a strange streaming sensation, as if water was being let loose from my heart and stomach, and my female spirit whooshed out, leaving me as bare as a man in a bathtub. I looked at the lady under the welcoming lights of the vestibule and thought, “Well, now doesn’t she look nice. I wonder if we can get something going here tonight….” (Listen to these lies...)
